Project Overview

The Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) aims to enhance regional integration and collaboration in the South African Development Community (SADC) by setting up integrated business intelligence platform with support of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

  • Collect, analyse and disseminate information to its members.
  • Encourage investment, productivity and improvements in technology in the country.
  • Initiate co-operation and affiliation programmes and other links with international organizations.

Business Needs

  • Integrated BI PlatformBuild & host a modern, efficient and integrated business intelligence platform with support of UNDP that provides a global reach to 16 SADC countries.
  • Robust DatabaseHave an accurate representation of the socio-economic condition in the SADC region with a robust databased for economic and sectoral analysis as well as forecasting capability.
  • StandardizationLeverage a consolidated database to achieve standardization across region and to discover, organize and analyze business, economic and financial statistics that helps improve decision-making with actionable insights.
  • Policy InfrastructureHelp create new policy infrastructure to promote trade and co-operation within and across SADC countries.

Project Scope

Objective
  • Familiarize key stakeholders with Power BI
  • Showcase reports and dashboards for an identified use case.
  • Demonstrate capabilities of Microsoft Power BI platform.
Design
  • One or two report(s) with 4-5 pages published in Power BI service, in an app workspace.
  • Create reports by ingesting the data for the user case in excel/csv files format.
Perform
  • Perform data exploration through linking and drilling
  • Derive context from historical trends
  • Compare results to business/sectoral goals
  • Explore and uncover data relationships through data visualization.
Deliver & Train
  • Publish finished reports and dashboards from the Power BI services as apps for the user consumption.
  • Deliver a high-level roadmap and suggestions for the Power BI platform implementation including a training pack.

Project Challenges

Scope Alignment
  • Gap in expectation between MCCI and Wipro initially in terms of the approach, the roles each organization played and the quantum of work to be delivered.
  • This was the first time MCCI engaged an IT and business consulting partner and required more guidance and advisory services than anticipated
Skills & Expertise
  • The initial team comprised primarily of Power BI developers and a solution architect in line.
  • Given that additional guidance was required. The team was supplemented with strong advisory capacity, business analysis skills, user experience and visual design expertise.
Timelines
  • Timelines to deliver were aggressive as the UNDP had to showcase the proof of concept to the New York office by a certain date.
  • There was a change in scope that added to the pressure.

  • A business analyst examined macro data and KPIs available.

  • Added ability to filter data for trend, pattern to provide business value to the end user.

  • The Power BI developer ensured feasibility to develop proposed visual in the tool
  • The data was restructured bottom up in a format that was easy to feed to Power BI.
